OAK FOREST, Ill. (AP) — A 21-year-old Chicago-area woman has been fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with police who initially were called to take her to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.
The Calumet City resident fled from Oak Forest officers about 11:50 a.m. Sunday, state police said in a release.
Officers followed and attempted to negotiate with the woman who they say had a handgun and went inside a local business where they exchanged gunfire.
The woman was pronounced dead at a hospital. An Oak Forest officer suffered an injury that's not considered to be life-threatening.
The shooting was being investigated by the state police Public Integrity Task Force.
Oak Forest is south of Chicago.
